In the wake of controversies surrounding the purchase of Oil Prospecting License (OPL) 245, additional new corruption charges have been filed by an anti-graft agency at the Federal High Court, Abuja against Royal Dutch Shell Plc and Eni for allegedly making corrupt payments in the sum of $801 million during the acquisition process of OPL 245 in 2011. A former Minister of Oil in Nigeria; Dan Etete and his company; Malabu Oil & Gas Ltd have been alleged to be the recipients of these ‘corrupt payments.
Whilst Eni has reiterated its stance that all transactions relating to the acquisition of the said license were devoid of any fraudulent action, Shell is yet to release any statement in respect thereof.
