TRANSFORMING NIGERIA’S MINING SECTOR STRATEGIES AND GOVERNMENT INITIATIVES

Our Sherif Hassan Olalekan interviewed Ms. Lumun Amanda Feese, Technical Adviser for the Mineral Sector Support for Economic Diversification Project, and Facilitator of the Manufacturing and Mining Policy Commission ...at the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG), on the ADVOCAAT LAW PRACTICE Distinguished Guest Series. The conversation focused on the mining sector and how it can become more viable. Ms. Feese is a thought leader in the mining sector, recognized for her strategic acumen and transformative initiatives in Nigeria's mining and steel sectors.

Mining was once a substantial contributor to the growth of the Nigerian economy, accounting for approximately 4 to 5 percent of the GDP in the 1960s and 1970s. However, in recent years (2018 - 2022), it contributes a mere 0.17% to the GDP. Given the global demand for critical minerals, some of which are found in Nigeria, how can we change the narrative to make mining a major contributor to the nation’s economic growth as outlined in the mining roadmap for 2025?

There were also discussions on the need to align proposed amendments to the Nigerian Mining Act with Nigeria's National Development Plan, 2021-2025 & Agenda 2050, the African Mining Vision (AMV), and the African Union’s Agenda 2063 to support transformative and sustainable mining industry development. Ms. Feese shared her thoughts on the key challenges facing the Nigerian mining sector and provided her views on the best ways to address these issues.
