The National Security Adviser (NSA), has ordered the arrest of Sixteen (16) Chinese nationals and eight (8) Nigerians who were involved in large scale illegal mining in Zurak, Wase Local Government area of Plateau State. The arrested Nigerians have been in active connivance with non-Nigerians in carrying out the illegal mining activities in Zurak. Zurak, a key location of substantial mineral deposits especially lead, zinc, copper, tin, tantalite and other base metals, has recorded huge loss of revenues due to the several incidents of illegal mining activities.

In view of the above, the Minister in the exercise of powers conferred on him by Section 4 of the Nigeria Minerals and Mining Act 2007, has declared a special mining zone over the lead/zinc in Kampala Zurak, and further directed the immediate stoppage of all mining activities in the area with the exception of duly licensed miners confirmed by the Mining Cadastre Office.
