The Federal Government (FG) through the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development (the Ministry) has issued directives that no new mining licences/permits should be issued to mining companies without the companies having obtained host communities consent. This is premised on the ongoing review of the Mining and Mineral Act of 2007 (the Act) and the bid by the Ministry to to ensure that the Act adheres to international best practice. In addition to the foregoing, mining firms have also been mandated to submit to the Ministry a standard Environmental Impact Assessment report before they can be considered for new mining licences/permits.
