The Court of Appeal has held the contentious ‘shipping line agency charge’ (SLAC) usually charged by shipping companies (for what?) to be illegal, ultra-vires; and void and consequently ordered all shipping companies to immediately cease to charge SLAC. In addition the Court of Appeal also directed the affected shipping companies to prepare respective accounts for the SLAC collected from 2006 till date at an interest rate of 21% per annum and forward the said accounts to the Nigerian Shippers’ Council ( for what purposes?). Based on this directive, there are speculations that the shipping companies may be requested to refunds the said charges.
